LAKES & VOLCANOES REGION
Nature, Folklore & Ocean Spirit
Chile’s Lakes & Volcanoes region is a spectacular gateway to Northern Patagonia, where volcanoes, ancient forests, crystalline lakes and powerful rivers shape one of the country’s most diverse landscapes.
Beginning in Araucanía, Pucón emerges as one of the region’s main hubs, set beneath the imposing Villarrica Volcano and surrounded by lakes, rivers and native forest. Here, outdoor adventure blends naturally with relaxation, from hiking and rafting to thermal springs immersed in nature. Beyond Pucón, Conguillío, Malalcahuello, Lonquimay and Lake Budi reveal a quieter side of the region, with striking volcanic scenery, araucaria forests, deep rooted Mapuche heritage and meaningful encounters with local communities.
Continuing south, Puerto Varas opens onto the vast beauty of Lake Llanquihue, framed by the Osorno and Calbuco volcanoes. From here, travelers can explore the Petrohué River, discover the charm of Frutillar and Puerto Octay, navigate across the Andes toward Argentina, or venture into protected areas of temperate rainforest.
The scenery becomes increasingly wild around Cochamó, Puelo and Lake Tagua Tagua, where fjords, granite mountains and remote valleys offer exceptional opportunities for hiking, fly fishing, kayaking and private wilderness experiences.
Off the mainland, Chiloé introduces an entirely different character. Its colorful palafitos, UNESCO protected wooden churches, rich maritime traditions and distinctive mythology reflect an island culture shaped by centuries of isolation. Around Castro, Ancud, Tantauco and Puñihuil, local gastronomy, wildlife and the rhythms of coastal life add yet another dimension to the journey.
From volcanic peaks and thermal waters to remote forests, island communities and pristine waterways, this part of Chile offers extraordinary variety within a single journey.
